What is an IT Bootcamp?

Definition of a Bootcamp

An IT Bootcamp is an intensive, fast-track training course in a Tech profession, with a hands-on approach to teaching.

And that's the big difference with traditional training: bootcamps are all about hands-on practice, to help you better assimilate what you've learned.

What's more, the aim of an IT bootcamp is usually to get participants to work in teams on concrete projects, just as they would in the world of work. This makes it a highly professional training program, generally geared towards the most promising professions of the future.

There are many different types of IT Bootcamp, depending on the job you want to do when you leave: Coding Bootcamp, Data Bootcamp, Cybersecurity Bootcamp.

How long does a Bootcamp last?

  • Full-time: at a rate of 35 hours per week, the full-time Bootcamp will last between 2 and 6 months, although most bootcamps last 3 months, as is the case for our Data Analyst Bootcamp.
  • Part-time: at a rate of 10 to 15 hours per week, a part-time Bootcamp will last between 6 months and 1 year. Our Cybersecurity Bootcamp, for example, lasts 8 months.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Bootcamp?

Benefits of a Bootcamp

  • Duration : the great advantage of a Bootcamp is that it's designed for a short, or even very short, period of time. There's no need to go back to school to learn a new trade!
  • Immediate practical application: taking part in a Bootcamp means immediately applying what you've learned, for better assimilation.
  • Attractiveness of the skills acquired: Bootcamps are designed to meet the needs of employers, making you highly attractive on the job market, especially in the IT professions that are recruiting most.
  • Non-selective : to take part in a Bootcamp, you don't need to have any major qualifications. Above all, you need to be highly motivated, and for highly technical Bootcamps, in programming or Data, you need logic and a taste for math!
  • Networking: Bootcamp is an intense, shared experience! The emphasis on project-based work enables you to forge links with your fellow students, who will go on to become potential colleagues in the IT world.

Disadvantages of Bootcamp training

  • Intensity : Bootcamp training courses are very fast-paced: you need to be able to store up a lot of knowledge and produce for projects in a short space of time.
  • Working independently: Bootcamp also requires the ability to work independently, to find solutions and seek answers to practical problems in order to move forward. Not every topic can be covered!

What are the different types of Bootcamp and how do they work?

Coding Bootcamp

A Coding Bootcamp will teach you how to code and introduce you to the main programming languages, although some Bootcamps specialize in a particular language, such as JS (javascript).

It's the ideal bootcamp for web developers, but not only, as it opens the door to careers as Product Manager, UX Designer or Software Engineer. Le Wagon offers a web developer bootcamp.

Bootcamp in Data

A Data Analysis Bootcamp is designed to teach you how to analyze data in a business-oriented context, in order to help you make strategic decisions. The idea is to master data centralization and marketing analysis tools, as well as programming skills - some bootcamps even specialize in Python. This bootcamp offers a wide range of career opportunities: data analyst, data scientist, but also business analyst or big data analyst.

Cybersecurity Bootcamp

A Cybersecurity Bootcamp focuses on computer security issues and teaches you how computers and networks work, and how to identify and respond to security flaws. Likewise, learning programming skills, particularly Python, is central. This type of bootcamp leads to careers as cybersecurity engineers, cybersecurity consultants or CISOs

Digital Marketing Bootcamp

A Digital Marketing Bootcamp usually includes learning about the platforms and levers for mastering online advertising: knowing social networks and their eco-systems by heart, e-mailing, affiliation... Some bootcamps also specialize in SEO or SEA.

UX Design Bootcamp

A UX Design Bootcamp will teach you how to design a digital interface that adapts to any type of medium (smartphone, tablet, computer), is accessible and adapted to users' needs.

You're likely to be immersed in graphic and experience design, 4C methodology, the agile method, and will need to learn to master a number of collaborative and graphic creation tools. You'll then be able to apply for UX Designer positions. Iron hack offers a renowned UX Design Bootcamp.

How do you choose your Bootcamp?

Bootcamps are all the rage, and there are plenty of them on the market. To choose the right IT Bootcamp, you first need to look at the one that best suits your needs and personal constraints.

Next, the following four criteria seem key to determining whether the training offered by the Bootcamp is of high quality:

  • A clear, regularly-updated program: the advantage of Bootcamp is that it offers training that's as close as possible to the needs of the market, so keeping the content up to date is a key criterion.
  • A high level of supervision: it's best to be autonomous to take part in a Bootcamp, but that doesn't mean being left to your own devices! The Bootcamp must offer support throughout the course, with teachers and coaches on hand to answer your questions and boost your morale if you feel a little down.
  • Peer validation: positive reviews from past participants will give you an idea of the level of satisfaction following the Bootcamp.
  • A diploma recognized by the State and employers: whether it's a certification, a diploma or something else, the aim is to be able to promote your participation in Bootcamp in the world of work.

How much does Bootcamp training cost?

The average cost of a Bootcamp is between 5,000 and 10,000 euros. The price varies according to the field of training, the duration of the course, and the learning mode (full-time or part-time, face-to-face or distance learning). The good news is that there are many ways to help finance your Bootcamp.

For example, Jedha's Bootcamps to become a Data Analyst, Data Scientist or work in Cybersecurity cost 7,495 euros. They last 3 months full-time, and 8 months part-time, and all award state-recognized diplomas.

You now have all the keys you need to find your way through the IT Bootcamp jungle and make your choice. If you're more specifically interested in a Data or Cybersecurity Bootcamp, you can download our syllabus, or take part in our online Open House, which takes place every 2 weeks!
